TpT's AI ban: what sellers should do now
TPT is making its marketplace AI-free. The written policy isn't out yet, but sellers were told to start replacing AI content now. Here's what's known, what isn't, and the order to work through your store.
What TPT announced
- At the October 8, 2026 Seller Town Hall, TPT committed to keeping the marketplace "teacher created, classroom ready, and AI free". It confirmed the ban to Chalkbeat on October 15.
- It covers AI-generated text and images in your resource files and in your covers, thumbnails, previews and descriptions.
- Sellers should stop adding AI content and begin replacing it in published listings.
- It applies to every seller, whether you choose Exclusive or Basic before December 31.
- TPT is building tools to find and remove AI-generated resources, and a way for buyers to report them.
What's still unclear
- The deadline for fixing existing listings. TPT said it doesn't intend to unfairly penalize established stores.
- Where "AI-assisted" ends. Brainstorming wasn't prohibited. Editing, spell-check tools and AI features inside design apps aren't spelled out.
- Penalties and appeals: whether a flagged listing is hidden or deleted, what happens to its reviews, and how to contest a false report.
- Clip art and fonts you licensed from other sellers, where you can't be sure how they were made.
Some sellers already report stores being targeted, so it's worth acting before the written policy arrives.
A checklist for your store, in order
- Back up everything before you change anything. Download your Sales Reports and Product Statistics CSVs, save every product file outside TpT, and save each listing's title, description, tags and images. If a listing is removed, or an edit goes wrong, that's your only copy. The backup guide covers each piece.
- Make a list of what needs work. Go listing by listing and mark which ones have AI-made covers, thumbnails, previews, descriptions or content. A spreadsheet with one row per listing makes this quick.
- Fix covers and thumbnails first. They're the most visible part of a listing and the easiest for anyone to report.
- Rewrite descriptions in your own words. Start with your best sellers (Product Statistics shows which ones they are).
- Review the resource files themselves, best sellers first. Note anything you're unsure about, such as licensed clip art, so you can decide once the written policy is out.
- Keep proof of your process. Source files, drafts, design-app history and dates show the work is yours if a listing is ever reported.
If you're thinking about selling elsewhere too
The AI rules only apply on TPT, but Payhip, Etsy and other platforms have their own policies. If you're going Basic, the alternatives comparison shows the fees and what you keep per sale.
Questions
Is TpT banning AI-generated resources?
Yes. At its October 8, 2026 Seller Town Hall, TPT said it wants the marketplace to be AI-free and confirmed the ban to Chalkbeat on October 15. It applies to every seller, Exclusive or Basic.
What does the TpT AI ban cover?
AI-generated text and images in resource files, and in covers, thumbnails, previews and product descriptions. Sellers were told to stop adding AI content and to begin replacing it in listings they've already published.
Is there a deadline to remove AI content from existing listings?
Not yet. TPT said a written policy would follow in the coming weeks and that it doesn't intend to unfairly penalize established stores. Sellers shouldn't assume they have unlimited time.
Can I still use AI for brainstorming?
TPT didn't prohibit AI-assisted brainstorming in what it announced, but it hasn't clearly defined AI-assisted versus AI-generated. Wait for the written policy and keep the final text and images your own.
Based on reporting from Chalkbeat and seller summaries of the October 8 Town Hall, checked October 18, 2026. TPT's written policy will be the source of truth, so read it when it's published. We'll update this page then.
